FPS PE Curriculum Statement

Intent
At Flintham Primary School we deliver a broad and balanced PE Curriculum, which is matched to the National Curriculum objectives. PE is a vital part of school life and ultimately our children’s future well-being. It is therefore our intent to provide an inclusive, broad and balanced PE curriculum that ensures ALL children will benefit, whether through enhancing existing skills, learning new skills or being introduced to new sports, clubs, teams and organisations.
It is our intent to ensure children understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and to equip them with the tools to do so through health and well-being education. Children must understand how to take care of themselves both physically and mentally in-order to be successful as adults.
Beyond merely a subject, we believe that participation in sporting activity is a key element of developing a school in which pupils are proud of the community in which they belong. Therefore, great emphasis is placed upon additional sporting opportunities beyond the lesson within after-school clubs, inter-house and inter-school competition and festivals as well as directly trying to support the local clubs within the Flintham area and our feeder schools.

Implementation
With our committed staff and coaching teams, the children receive high quality PE lessons which are mapped out in broad and balanced blocks using our scheme of work document. Professional sports coaches and teachers are used to ensure the provision is of the highest quality. Coaching provision is mapped out to reflect upcoming sporting events so that the children are taught the necessary skills to compete at an acceptable level and give the children an additional aspect to their sense of purpose in their learning.
Each year group will receive a minimum of 1½ hours of PE each week with additional sporting clubs run after school on most nights and some lunchtimes. Sports Leaders provide additional sporting opportunities on the playground during break and lunchtimes to embed key skills and encouragement self-improvement.
Swimming is taught in addition to this in Years 3/4 and 5/6, with each year group spending time at the pool in order to achieve the required distance of 25m and reach the required standard in ASA water safety.
Residential trips for KS2 include opportunities to pursue a wider range of physical and team building activities (climbing Jacob’s Ladder, gorge walking and caving) to further enhance experience and build confidence and skills.
Children will have opportunities to participate in a wealth of competitions through inter-house competitions within the school, inter-school competition through the school sports partnership, a football mini-league with local schools of similar size, NCCC softball cricket, rugby festivals coordinated by Newark Rugby Club and various stand-alone events through the Equals academy such as Ultimate Frisbee and Bouccia.

Impact
Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Flintham, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in-order to live happy and healthy lives.
The aim is that our extensive PE curriculum will impact greatly on our children’s ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to make appropriate choices about their physical and mental health. The curriculum will develop positive self-awareness in children as they become physically competent. They will also demonstrate a healthy attitude to competition, showing respect for individuals, teams, officials and coaches. Children’s success both individually and in teams is celebrated.
Teacher’s assess through the set of progression steps that are set out in the nine intention sub-areas (net and wall, swimming, athletics, dance, gymnastics, striking and fielding, outdoor and adventurous, games and invasion games) as well as through individual achievement at competitive sporting events.
