Knowledge Organisers

A knowledge organiser is a document that contains key facts and information that children need to have a basic knowledge and understanding of a topic. It is used in the classroom to teach and review key knowledge. Knowledge organisers are a key part of helping children know and remember more.

Our knowledge organisers include:

  • essential knowledge about a topic or concept, usually laid out in easily digestible chunks
  • key vocabulary or technical terms and their meanings associated with the key concept or topic
  • quality images such as maps, diagrams and photographs
  • features such as a timeline

Every half-term, we will send the relevant Knowledge Organisers home linked to the topic we are studying.

Termly Parent Letter

Every term, we will send home a parent letter with any additional information your teacher feels that you might need to know e.g. key dates or enrichment opportunities.

Class Activities

Autumn Term 1

Water Class have had a great start to the new school year and have been enjoying learning about the Stone Age this term. On the 3rd of October we went to Bestwood Environmental Centre for a fun packed day of hands on learning. The children were divided into three tribes and given ‘animal skins’ to wear: the tribe of the sun, the tribe of the moon and the tribe of the mountain. Their first job was to build a shelter to protect themselves from wild animals and to keep warm overnight. They then had the opportunity to try their hand at cave painting, willow weaving for an animal enclosure and cutting wood to make a medallion. After a well deserved lunch they took it in turns to build a replica of Stonehenge, decorate their medallion and make a simple clay pot. The day finished with some replica artefacts for the children to handle and discuss. Liz the centre leader was amazing and really made us feel like we had travelled back to the Stone Age for the day. The children had a fantastic time, even the drizzly weather didn’t dampen their excitement and enthusiasm.

Alongside our history topic we have been reading ‘Stig of the Dump’ as our class reader and in English we have been using ‘Stone Age Boy’ [a story of a boy who travels back to the Stone Age] as inspiration for our writing so, the children have been fully immersed into the life of the first human beings.

Autumn Term 2

The children have continued to learn about pre-history and have progressed from the Stone Age, through the Bronze Age and into the Iron Age. They have learnt how the arrival in Britain of new people with different skills led to the ability to make metal tools and weapons. We have finished with the development and building of hill forts as Celtic tribes sort to protect their people from attack by other tribes. This will lead neatly to the Roman Invasion of Britain in the spring term.

The children have learnt about the role of archaeologists and the study of artefacts as the main source of information in a time before the written word.

Water class have had an extremely creative term. In English, after being inspired by the wonderfully imaginative book Until I Met Dudley, the children have written some of their own explanations of some cracking contraptions, similar to Wallace and Gromit’s. They have also made incredibly persuasive adverts for some of Dudley’s inventions – some budding sales people amongst them! Furthermore, we have started learning more complex coding with Scratch, creating dancing sprites and the class have each designed and made their own drawstring bag this term. A big thank you to all who helped with this tricky introduction to designing and sewing – the children persevered and should be proud of what they achieved.

The final swimming lesson took place last week with all the children taking part in some fun and games. All groups have made great progress with their swimming ability and they have also leant some important life saving and rescue skills too.

On Friday 5th December the children enjoyed a Christmas craft afternoon. First they made cards and angels for the advent window. Then when parents joined us at 2pm they were able to make a variety of different Christmas crafts to take home. It was a lovely festive afternoon, thank you to all the parents who came along to help.
