Knowledge Organisers
A knowledge organiser is a document that contains key facts and information that children need to have a basic knowledge and understanding of a topic. It is used in the classroom to teach and review key knowledge. Knowledge organisers are a key part of helping children know and remember more.
Our knowledge organisers include:
- essential knowledge about a topic or concept, usually laid out in easily digestible chunks
- key vocabulary or technical terms and their meanings associated with the key concept or topic
- quality images such as maps, diagrams and photographs
- features such as a timeline
Every half-term, we will send the relevant Knowledge Organisers home linked to the topic we are studying.
Termly Parent Letter
Every half term, we will send home a parent letter with any additional information your teacher feels that you might need to know e.g. key dates or enrichment opportunities.
Class Activities
Autumn Term 1
We have had a wonderful start to the academic year! Our topic this half term has been the Civil War in Newark. We started this topic by visiting the Civil War Centre in Newark. The children thoroughly enjoyed this trip and participated in lots of activities throughout the morning including reinacting the events that led to the Civil War, drawing chosen objects from the museum and learning how to load a musket! They also had the opportunity to dress up in armour! In Science, we have been learning about properties of material and the children have conducted many experiments including: sieving, filtering, evaporating and dissolving materials. We have also looked at reversible and irreversible changes using items such as milk and white vinegar to create a protein called casein (which when left for 48 hours turns to a plastic!) and adding mentos to coke to create an explosion! In English we have been reading ‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo. The children have been very engaged in this book and have written some wonderful diary entries and letters based on this. We have also attended a Safety event at Holme Pierrepoint which involved short activities looking at how we can stay safe. Some of these activities included learning the basics of CPR, looking at fire hazards in the home and working alongside Nottinghamshire Police to keep safe online. The children were fantastic and we even scored the most points on the day for our behaviour and engagement!
Autumn Term 2
Earth Class have had another busy half term full of exciting learning! Our topic this half term has been the local area. To start our learning we took a walk around Flintham village with Sue Clayton, exploring how the village has changed over time. This was a very informative walk where the children learnt about the types of buildings that were once in Flintham and we even got to look at a dovecote! The children then used their map skills to look at Flintham and spot changes over time. In Science we have looked at the life cycles of different animal groups including mammals, birds and amphibians. They have used their knowledge of this to draw life cycles and even cracked open eggs to study the parts inside. The children have also looked at sexual and asexual reproduction in plants and have planted their own daffodil bulbs to observe the changes over time including how these plants clone. The children are doing well looking after these plants by measuring their growth and watering them weekly. We can’t wait to see them by Spring!
We had our final swimming lesson last week where the children were able to play some team games in the water. The children have made some wonderful progress and have learnt some key life saving skills.
In DT the children have been planning and making their own fairground ride using electrical circuits, pulleys and axels. They have worked well within their groups to design and make these and I am impressed with the outcomes!
We have had some exciting Christmas activities to round off the half term. The children have enjoyed a Christmas dinner, calendar making and a Christmas craft afternoon! Thank you to those parents/carers who were able to attend, it was lovely and the children thoroughly enjoyed it!
